SOYUZ (СОЮЗ) is a collective originally from Minsk, Belarus, now based in Warsaw. The group was founded by Belarusian multi instrumentalists Alex Chumak and Mikita Arlou, with Polish drummer Albert Karch and guitarist Igor Wiśniewski rounding out the lineup. Their sound weaves together jazz, folk and pop through lush orchestrations that draw on Eastern European roots as well as influences from further afield. Their album 'Force of the Wind' put them on the map after Bandcamp named it one of the best albums of 2022 and it earned airplay on BBC Radio. Their follow up 'KROK', released through British indie label Mr Bongo, takes the name from the Belarusian word for 'step' and marks the first time Chumak has written lyrics in his mother tongue. Recorded across São Paulo and Warsaw, the album features contributions from Tim Bernardes and Brazilian musicians Sessa, Biel Basile and Marcelo Cabral, blending folk ballads, jazzy pop and richly arranged strings and brass.
