About
Spraakmakers is a concert theatre format that pairs classical and contemporary music with spoken reflections on pressing social themes. Actors and musicians share the stage as equals, with text and music sharpening each other rather than one simply illustrating the other. The series launched in 2022 and has since built a loyal following around that core idea. A typical programme might set Beethoven's Les Adieux against an actor's meditation on hereditary monarchy, or match Joey Roukens's unsettling piece What Remains to a reflection on the culture of fear in modern society. Performers have included actor Jan Decleir, known for playing royal roles on stage and screen, actress Georgina Verbaan, and pianist Hannes Minnaar alongside the Dudok Quartet. The combination of top tier actors with serious classical musicians is what gives Spraakmakers its particular charge.
