Hamburg's Sylvan have been quietly building one of the more compelling catalogues in European progressive rock since the late 1990s. Rooted in the lush, melodic tradition of bands like Marillion, they layer symphonic textures with a knack for concept albums that actually have something to say. Posthumous Silence, a haunting record about a father uncovering his daughter's diary, marked a turning point that won them serious attention in the prog world, and the rougher, emotionally charged X Rayed showed they could work darker territory just as well. Their tenth album One to Zero, released in 2021, tackled artificial intelligence from the perspective of a new intelligence sizing up humanity, and critics welcomed it as a genuine return to form. Vocalist Marco Glühmann, who joined back in 1995, remains the voice of the band, and his collaboration with Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery surfaced in 2024, pointing to a group that stays creatively restless.
