Few bands can claim to have beaten Nirvana at their own game, but Teenage Fanclub managed it when Bandwagonesque topped Spin magazine's 1991 best album poll, edging out Nevermind. The Scottish group, originally from the Glasgow C86 scene, built their reputation on gloriously immediate hooks, fuzzy guitar riffs and layered vocal harmonies, a sound sharpened by producer Don Fleming and carried through across more than a dozen studio albums. Liam Gallagher once called them the second best band in the world, which, given who said it, counts as high praise. For most of their career the songwriting was split evenly between Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love, giving Teenage Fanclub an unusually democratic feel, three distinct voices sharing the mic in equal rotation. Since Love's departure in 2018 the band has carried on as a five piece, and their 2023 album Nothing Lasts Forever, previewed by the single Foreign Land, shows they still have plenty to say.
