About

Also known as: Tenebrae Choir

Tenebrae is a London choir directed by Nigel Short, with a reputation that has taken them to concert halls across the world. Their programming often digs into the choral tradition of Renaissance England, drawing on both familiar giants and composers who rarely get the spotlight. A programme devoted to Tudor sacred music is a good example of how the group works: alongside Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, they give time to figures like John Mundy and Robert White, pulling them out of obscurity and placing them in their proper context. The Tudor period makes for rich material precisely because the religious upheaval of the time left such clear marks on the music itself. The shift from Catholic to Anglican worship meant constant change in language, style and form, and Tenebrae explores that tension through composers who were, by background, all Catholic. It amounts to a close study in religious and musical identity.
