Tess Merlot has built a reputation as one of the most striking chansonnières working in the Low Countries today. Her approach to French chanson is personal and unadorned, a quality that comes through whether she is performing alongside a full orchestra or a stripped back ensemble. She has collaborated with musicians from the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, and a live album from that partnership found a wide audience. Her own compositions sit comfortably next to the classics: songs like Rien à perdre, Mon Paris and Une Passante share the stage with work by Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf, and the contrast never feels forced. Her concerts have a range that she describes herself as whispering and blazing, with everything in between.
