The Afghan Whigs built their reputation by doing something almost nobody else in the early 1990s alt rock scene managed: they leaned hard into R&B and soul at a time when their peers were chasing grunge. Their 1993 album Gentlemen, recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis where Big Star and Led Zeppelin had worked, is the clearest proof of that instinct paying off. Pitchfork called them one of the few alt bands to actually flourish on a major label, and the single 'Debonair' became a Modern Rock Top 20 hit. Front man Greg Dulli had sworn the band would never reunite after their 2001 split, but they proved him wrong in 2012 and have been active since. Their discography now stretches to include Do to the Beast in 2014 and How Do You Burn? in 2022, showing a band that never really settled into nostalgia mode. The core sound still carries that tension between raw rock energy and slow burning soul that made Gentlemen such a lasting record.
