Formed in Brooklyn in 1999 by Cincinnati natives, The National built one of indie rock's most distinctive sounds around Matt Berninger's low baritone and the intricate interplay between twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner on guitar and keys, with the Devendorf brothers locking down the rhythm section. Their early albums quietly won over critics, but it was Boxer in 2007 and High Violet in 2010 that turned them into a genuine headliner act. Trouble Will Find Me earned a Grammy nomination in 2013, and Sleep Well Beast took home the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2017. Their 2023 album First Two Pages of Frankenstein featured Sufjan Stevens, Taylor Swift, and Phoebe Bridgers, hit number one on Billboard's AAA and Rock charts, and was followed just months later by the surprise release Laugh Track, written and recorded during the same sessions.
