About
Also known as: Smahing Pumpkins, Smashign Pumpkins, Smashing Pumkins, Smashing Pumpkins, The Smashing Pumpkinsgs
Few bands squeezed as much into a decade as the Smashing Pumpkins did in the 1990s. Formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin, the band built a sound that pulled from heavy metal, psychedelia, dream pop, shoegaze, and progressive rock all at once, dense and layered in a way that felt genuinely unlike anything else around. Siamese Dream put them on the map in 1993, and then Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, eventually going Diamond. Thirty million albums sold worldwide speaks for itself. After disbanding around 2000 and then regrouping in stages, the classic lineup of Corgan, Iha, and Chamberlin reunited fully in 2018 and has kept busy ever since. They released Cyr in 2020, followed by the ambitious three part rock opera Atum between 2022 and 2023, and then Aghori Mhori Mei in 2024. Their YouTube channel has also been feeding fans deep cuts and behind the scenes moments, including a breakdown of that famous whistle in the fan favorite Mayonaise.
