About
Melbourne's The Cat Empire built their reputation the hard way, gigging through jazz clubs and festival slots before becoming one of Australia's most energetic live acts. Their sound is a restless blend of jazz, ska, funk, reggae, and Latin influences, held together by trumpet lines, turntables, and a rhythm section that rarely sits still. The six piece lineup that carried the band for most of their career featured Felix Riebl on vocals and percussion alongside Harry James Angus on trumpet, and the chemistry between them drove some genuinely memorable music. Their second album, Two Shoes, recorded in Havana and released in 2005, hit number one in Australia and captured what the band do best: genre hopping that somehow feels effortless rather than restless. The lead single "Sly" landed in the top 30 and even made it onto the FIFA 08 soundtrack. A slot at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games opening ceremony put them in front of an estimated billion viewers worldwide, which is not a bad gig by any measure.
