About

Also known as: Chameleons, Chameleons UK, The Chameleons U.K., The Chameleons UK

Few bands capture the eerie tension of early 1980s Manchester quite like The Chameleons. Formed in Middleton in 1981, they built their sound around interlocking guitars, Burgess's commanding vocals, and a knack for atmosphere that drew comparisons to U2 and Echo and the Bunnymen without ever quite sounding like either. Their 1983 debut Script of the Bridge is now considered one of the defining post punk albums of the era, even though commercial success largely passed them by. Strange Times in 1986 showed them reaching new heights before the sudden death of their manager Tony Fletcher ended everything abruptly in 1987. After a long hiatus, the band reformed in 2000 and released three more records, including Why Call It Anything and the acoustic set Strip. A second split followed in 2003. Mark Burgess kept the songs alive through ChameleonsVox for years, and in 2021 he and guitarist Reg Smithies brought the Chameleons back again with a refreshed lineup. They never had the chart profile of their Manchester peers, but the cult following they earned over the decades says everything about the lasting pull of their atmospheric, guitar driven sound.
