Few bands arrived with as much momentum as The Coral. Formed in Hoylake on the Wirral in 1996, they crashed into the early 2000s indie scene with a self titled debut that hit number five on the UK Albums Chart, earned a Mercury Prize nomination, and produced the beloved single "Dreaming of You". NME ranked it the fourth best album of that year, and the band were being talked about as the first English act of the guitar group revival. Their follow up, Magic and Medicine, went all the way to number one and shifted their sound toward dreamlike acoustic ballads, landing four UK Top 20 singles including "Pass It On". They kept evolving from there, each record pulling in a different direction: the lo fi darkness of Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, the polished songwriting of Roots and Echoes, which even featured Noel Gallagher on guitar for a BBC Electric Proms set. Spanning indie rock, folk rock and neo psychedelia, The Coral have never really settled into one sound, and that restlessness is a big part of their appeal.
