About

Also known as: Jam

The Jam managed something almost unheard of in British pop: 18 consecutive top 40 singles without a single miss, from their 1977 debut all the way to their break up in December 1982, including four number ones. Formed in Woking, Surrey, by Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler, the trio carved out a sound that mixed the aggression of 1970s punk with the melodic pull of 1960s soul and mod influences. Weller played a Rickenbacker 330 and wrote nearly everything, while Foxton's prominent basslines drove classics like "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice". Their lyrics had a distinctly English character, full of social commentary that set them apart from contemporaries like The Clash or the Sex Pistols. Their final studio album, The Gift, hit number one on the UK Albums Chart, and when the band split, 12 of their first 15 reissued singles landed back in the top 100.
