About

Three and four part harmonies set the Outlaws apart from nearly every other Southern rock band of their era, and it's a big part of why they sound like a country rock group wearing a Southern rock jacket. The Tampa, Florida band built their name on twin lead guitars, with Hughie Thomasson's quick, fluid Stratocaster runs earning him the nickname "The Flame" and a place in the Fender Hall of Fame. Billy Jones, on a Gibson Les Paul, played the other half of that conversation. Their 1975 self titled debut gave them "There Goes Another Love Song" and the long guitar jam "Green Grass and High Tides", which is still the song most fans point to. They were also the first act Clive Davis signed to Arista, after Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant more or less told him he'd be foolish not to. Their biggest chart hit came in 1980 with a cover of "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky", which reached No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.
