Starting out in King's Cross in 1982 under the deliberately provocative name Pogue Mahone, the band that became The Pogues threw Irish traditional music headfirst into the energy of punk rock, with Shane MacGowan's raw, poetic songwriting at the centre of it all. Their second album, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, produced by Elvis Costello, showed MacGowan hitting his stride as a writer, with tracks like "The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn" and a ferocious take on Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town" sitting alongside the album's stormy originals. Then there is "Fairytale of New York", the duet with Kirsty MacColl that reached number two in the UK at Christmas 1987 and has refused to go away ever since. Their third album, If I Should Fall from Grace with God, is widely seen as the peak of their powers. MacGowan's worsening dependency eventually led to him being sacked during a 1991 tour, and the band went through lineup changes and frontmen before dissolving in 2014. A reformed version featuring Spider Stacy, Jem Finer and James Fearnley has since picked things back up.
