About
Few Celtic punk songs have pulled off what The Rumjacks managed with "An Irish Pub Song": a sardonic dig at the global spread of fake Irish pub culture that racked up over 99 million YouTube views and landed a perennial spot on Billboard's most popular St. Patrick's Day songs list. The Sydney outfit formed in 2008 and built their reputation on ferociously energetic live shows, earning early support slots with punk veterans UK Subs, GBH, and Gogol Bordello. Their sound blends hard punk energy with traditional Celtic instrumentation, think mandolin, bouzouki, tin whistle and banjo sitting right alongside loud guitars. After three albums with their original core lineup, the band relocated to Europe in 2016 and have been based there since. Their fourth album Saints Preserve Us, recorded in Milan in 2018, even features a track sung entirely in Irish Gaelic. Singer Mike Rivkees joined in 2020 and briefly stepped in for Dropkick Murphys frontman Al Barr in early 2022, which says something about the esteem he is held in within the Celtic punk world.
