About

Also known as: Who, ザ・フー

Few bands reshaped rock as fundamentally as The Who. Formed in London in 1964 from the bones of a group called the Detours, they quickly made their mark through a combination of raw energy and genuine musical invention: Pete Townshend's feedback drenched power chord playing, John Entwistle's melodic yet ferocious bass work, Keith Moon's explosive drumming, and Roger Daltrey's powerhouse vocals. On stage they were chaos incarnate, smashing instruments and blowing up drum kits while somehow holding it all together musically. Their run of 1960s singles, from 'My Generation' to 'I Can See for Miles', set the template for hard rock, punk and power pop alike. The 1969 concept album Tommy proved rock could carry serious narrative weight, and Who's Next followed with three of the genre's most enduring tracks: 'Baba O'Riley', 'Won't Get Fooled Again', and 'Behind Blue Eyes'. After Moon's death in 1978 and Entwistle's in 2002, the band carried on as a duo of Daltrey and Townshend, releasing the album Who in 2019.
