Few voices in American music are as immediately recognizable as Tom Waits. That battered, bourbon soaked growl has been delivering stories of drifters, drunks, and nighthawks since his debut Closing Time in 1973, but it was the wild left turn of Swordfishtrombones in 1983 that really showed what he was capable of. Nudged by his wife and collaborator Kathleen Brennan, he pulled in the fractured sounds of Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart to build something genuinely strange and his own. The trilogy that followed, Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years, cemented his cult status, and albums like Bone Machine and Mule Variations each won him a Grammy. He has written for Johnny Cash and Norah Jones, and his own songs have been covered by Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart and the Eagles. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, Waits remains one of the great originals, an actor, poet and theatrical performer as much as a musician.
