About
Also known as: Tutu
Tutu Puoane turned down a record deal from a major South African label so she could go study in Europe, and it paid off. The Pretoria born jazz singer, now based in Antwerp, won the SAMA for Best Traditional Jazz Album for her 2009 record Quiet Now, then took the same prize again in 2011 for Mama Africa, a tribute to Miriam Makeba made with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. That orchestra partnership kept going, with We Have A Dream following in 2018. Her catalogue also includes Song, Breathe and Ilanga, a live record with trumpeter Bert Joris and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and a guest spot on Michel Herr's album Positive. More recently she appeared on It Might As Well Swing with Rebirth::Collective and put out Wrapped In Rhythm (Vol 1) in 2024. Her music has taken her across Europe and to the USA.
