About
Týr are a folk metal band from the Faroe Islands whose entire world revolves around Norse mythology, Viking history, and the ancient traditions of their homeland. They blend power, doom, progressive, and folk metal into something distinctly their own, weaving kvæði (traditional Faroese music) into arrangements that stay true to original melodies while pushing the harmonies somewhere far more intricate. Frontman Heri Joensen has always been vocal about refusing to let genre labels box them in, and that restless approach shows in the music. Signed to Metal Blade Records since 2012, they have built a serious international following through relentless touring on the European and North American festival and club circuit, sharing stages with the likes of Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, and Korpiklaani. Their album Lay of Thrym tackled the uncomfortable topic of Nazi appropriation of Norse imagery head on, and they have never shied away from controversy, as their song "Rainbow Warrior" about the Sea Shepherd whaling dispute in the Faroe Islands makes clear.
