About
Few bands wear their Finnish identity as proudly as Ensiferum, whose name literally means "sword bearing" in Latin. Formed in Helsinki in 1995, they've built a formidable catalog of folk metal that blends Viking imagery, Kalevala melodies, and melodic death metal crunch into something that feels both ancient and viscerally heavy. Nine studio albums in, from their self titled 2001 debut through to Winter Storm in 2024, they've kept the same restless creative energy while cycling through a few key lineup changes along the way. Their sound has always been driven by guitarist and founding member Markus Toivonen, the one constant through it all. Vocalist and guitarist Petri Lindroos joined in 2004 after stepping in as a touring replacement, and his aggressive delivery became central to albums like Victory Songs and From Afar. Ensiferum have shared stages with everyone from Megadeth to Amon Amarth and headlined Paganfest tours across Europe and North America, cementing a reputation as one of folk metal's most relentless live acts.
