Eluveitie have carved out a genuinely distinctive corner of heavy music by blending melodic death metal with traditional Celtic instrumentation. Hurdy gurdy, bagpipes, and harsh vocals sharing the same space sounds like a gimmick on paper, but the band from Winterthur, Switzerland pull it off with real conviction. Their lyrics lean deep into Celtic Gaul mythology and are often written in a reconstructed form of the ancient Gaulish language, an extinct tongue that few bands would even think to revive. Even the band name carries that obsession with Celtic heritage: it comes from an Etruscan inscription found in Mantua dating to around 300 BC. Founded in 2002 by Chrigel Glanzmann as a solo studio project, Eluveitie grew into a full band and broke through with Slania in 2008 after signing to Nuclear Blast. That album charted in both Switzerland and Germany and set the tone for a string of releases covering both full electric metal albums and acoustic Evocation records. Their 2025 deluxe release of Ategnatos shows the band is still very much active and digging deeper into the sound they have spent over two decades refining.
