Arch Enemy built their name on a ferocious brand of melodic death metal that balances crushing aggression with sharp, hooky guitar work. Founded in 1995 by Carcass guitarist Michael Amott and Johan Liiva, both veterans of the death metal band Carnage, the band signed to Century Media and broke through internationally with Stigmata in 1998. The revolving cast of musicians has included members of Carcass, Mercyful Fate, Meshuggah, Opeth and The Agonist, giving the band serious metal pedigree throughout their career. One of the things that kept Arch Enemy in the conversation for decades was their frontline of commanding vocalists. Angela Gossow took over in 2000 and redefined what a death metal vocalist could look like, before stepping aside in 2014 to manage the band, handing the mic to Alissa White Gluz. White Gluz departed at the end of 2025, and Lauren Hart of Once Human was announced as the new frontwoman in early 2026. Eleven studio albums into their run, including Rise of the Tyrant, which charted at number 84 on the Billboard 200, Arch Enemy shows no sign of slowing down.
