Named after the Sindarin word for Mount Doom from Tolkien's Middle earth, Amon Amarth have built one of metal's most distinctive identities around Viking mythology and thundering melodic death metal. The Tumba, Sweden five piece, fronted by vocalist Johan Hegg, write about Norse battles and mythology with a conviction that sets them apart from the genre's more theatrical side. Their 2008 album Twilight of the Thunder God was the turning point, cracking the US Billboard 200 at number 50 and landing guest spots from Apocalyptica and Lars Göran Petrov of Entombed, while an accompanying Norse mythology comic strip shipped with European magazines. With 12 studio albums behind them, including Surtur Rising, Jomsviking, Berserker, and The Great Heathen Army, they have kept the formula tight without letting it go stale. Their 2025 video We Rule The Waves shows the band is still very much active. Critics who try to pin a Viking metal tag on them are gently corrected by the band themselves, who prefer the melodic death metal label they wear with genuine pride.
