Few bands did more to put Gothenburg on the metal map than In Flames. Formed in 1990, they became one of the defining acts of the Gothenburg metal scene alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, building a sound that wove melody into the aggression of death metal in a way that felt genuinely new. Their fourth album Colony cemented a stable lineup, and the records that followed sold over two million copies worldwide. With their sixth album Reroute to Remain in 2002, In Flames started pulling away from melodic death metal toward a more alternative direction, a move that split their fanbase but opened the band up to a much wider audience. They have kept evolving since, racking up seven Swedish Grammis wins along the way, including Hard Rock/Metal Album of the Year for Soundtrack to Your Escape, Come Clarity, A Sense of Purpose, and most recently their fourteenth studio album Foregone in 2023.
