About
Václav Luks is the kind of conductor who pulls forgotten masterpieces back into the light. The Czech harpsichordist, horn player and conductor has made it his mission to champion Baroque repertoire, with a particular focus on Jan Dismas Zelenka, Bach and Handel, and his work has been central to a genuine revival of interest in Czech composers like Josef Mysliveček. He founded the Prague Baroque orchestra Collegium 1704 and its affiliated vocal ensemble Collegium Vocale 1704, which have become regular fixtures at major European venues including the Berliner Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, the Salzburger Festspiele and the Elbphilharmonie. His opera productions have been a highlight of Collegium 1704's output, from Handel's Rinaldo to a 2017 world premiere of Vivaldi's Arsilda, regina di Ponto and a staging of Handel's Alcina co produced with the Opéra Royale de Versailles. The ensemble also contributed to the 2022 epic historical film Il Boemo about Mysliveček's life. On disc, Luks has recorded extensively for labels including Accent and Supraphon, covering everything from Zelenka masses to Handel's Messiah.
