Vanessa Carlton's piano riff for "A Thousand Miles" is the kind of thing you hear once and never forget. The 2002 debut single spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaked in the top five, and picked up three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The debut album Be Not Nobody followed, hitting No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and moving over 1.4 million copies worldwide, with "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby" rounding out its singles run. She has kept pushing her sound further out with each record since. Harmonium drew on a more personal vision, Heroes and Thieves earned critical respect even without big chart numbers, and the independently released Rabbits on the Run and Liberman were praised for their honest subject matter and musical ambition. Love Is an Art came out in 2020, and she added a Broadway credit to her name with a leading role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in 2019. Her most recent album, Veils, followed in 2026.
