About
Yard Act built their reputation on sharp, politically charged lyrics delivered over a sound that pulls from post punk, 1970s Italo disco, 90s hip hop and early 2000s indie rock all at once. The Leeds four piece front that mix with vocalist James Smith's dark humour and cynical storytelling, tackling capitalism, gentrification and social class with a surrealist edge. Their debut album The Overload landed in January 2022 and shot straight to number two on the UK Albums Chart, a remarkable result for a band that had only put out four independent singles beforehand. A BBC Sound of 2022 shortlist spot added to the buzz. They followed it up with Where's My Utopia? in March 2024, and a collaboration with Elton John on a re recorded version of 100% Endurance showed they were never short of a surprise.
