Few musicians working in free jazz today draw comparisons to Albert Ayler, but Zoh Amba does, and it's not hard to hear why. The Tennessee born saxophonist, flutist, guitarist, and pianist works in the avant garde tradition with a spiritual depth rooted in Advaita Vedanta practice, and that inner life bleeds into every note. Their name, meaning mother, was given to them during a spiritual retreat, which tells you a lot about where this music is coming from. Their debut record O, Sun was produced by John Zorn for Tzadik Records, and they followed it with O Life, O Light Vol. 1 on 577 Records. More recently, Sun landed on Smalltown Supersound, and Eyes Full on Matador Records sees Amba pushing into country influenced singer songwriter territory, a real left turn that shows they are not interested in staying put.
