About
Formed in Rome in 1997, Zu are a trio built around an unusual combination of baritone saxophone, bass and drums, plus electronics. That lineup might suggest jazz, but their sound pulls hard from punk and noise, and the result genuinely resists any neat label. AllMusic put it well by saying they defy easy categorization, and John Zorn called their music something that totally blows away what most bands do. Over the years they have racked up fourteen albums and played festivals across Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Collaboration is central to how Zu work. A long string of guests have appeared on their records and at live shows, including Mike Patton, Buzz Osborne, Mats Gustafsson and Damo Suzuki, and the band has a reputation for adapting fluidly to each guest's world rather than flattening them into the Zu sound. Their 2009 album Carboniferous, featuring Patton and Osborne, was voted Album of the Year by Rock A Rolla magazine. More recently they released the collaborative record RuinsZu on the jazzIsDead label.
