About

Briskey is the musical project of Gert Keunen, a Ghent based musician, composer and music academic who has been shaping the Belgian music scene in one form or another for decades. Armed with an Atari computer and an early version of Cubase, he carved out a sound that blends jazz, electronics, samples and live instruments into something warm and cinematic. A remix for Groove Armada and a handful of maxis got the attention of DJs like Gilles Peterson, and the 2003 debut album Cucumber Lodge took off on Studio Brussel and Radio 1, even earning a ZAMU Award nomination. Live, Keunen brings in a rotating cast of top Flemish musicians to make the music breathe. The follow up Scarlett Road House landed Briskey spots at festivals across Europe and even a Japanese compilation release in 2007. The third album Before During After pushed the sound somewhere darker and more trip hop, with Lady Linn guesting on vocals. For a bigger, brasher take on the same songs, there is also Briskey Big Band, a fifteen piece ensemble that turns the usually quiet and filmic Briskey material into something with real punch.
