About

Also known as: D. Carter, Derek Carter, Derrick L Carter, Derrick L. Carter, Derrick La Monte Carter

One of underground house music's most enduring figures, Derrick Carter has been shaping Chicago's sound since the early 1980s and remains a key player in the global scene decades later. His DJ sets are a masterclass in black music history, weaving together old school disco, soul and jazz with a creativity that keeps crowds guessing. He co founded Classic Recordings in 1995 with Luke Solomon and Chez Damier, a label instantly recognizable for its quirky catalog system that counted down from 100 instead of up. As a remixer Carter has a genuinely eclectic CV, taking on tracks for artists as varied as The Human League, Ricky Martin, Modjo and Röyksopp. His productions under group names like Conception, Symbols and Instruments, and Tone Theory span across genres, and releases like Squaredancing in a Roundhouse and Poverty De Luxe cemented his reputation well beyond Chicago. In 2006 Newcity ranked him among the 100 most famous Chicagoans, in the same company as Frankie Knuckles and Felix da Housecat.
