Mohini Dey is one of those bassists who makes seasoned professionals do a double take. The Kolkata born Indian musician built her reputation as a session and live player before releasing her self titled debut album in August 2023, and her list of collaborators reads like a who's who of virtuoso players: Steve Vai, Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, Zakir Hussain, Greg Howe, and A. R. Rahman, among others. She also plays in the band MaMoGi alongside drummer Gino Banks. Dey's style clearly bridges the worlds of rock, jazz, and Indian classical music, which makes her a versatile fit across wildly different projects. In 2024 she was invited to join Willow Smith's new band, a move that puts her in front of a whole new audience. With a debut album out and that kind of collaborative range, she is one of the more interesting bass voices working today.
