About

Also known as: Emily Cowings

Emily King has a knack for making soul and jazz feel deeply personal without ever tipping into self pity. Born in New York City and known by her birth name Emily Cowings, she first appeared on record in 2004 on a Nas album before releasing her debut, East Side Story, in 2007. That record earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album, announcing her as a genuine songwriting force rather than just another voice for hire. She has kept things largely independent ever since, self recording her EP Seven at home and launching her own label to put out The Switch in 2015. Signing with ATO Records brought her 2019 album Scenery, which picked up two Grammy nominations including Best Engineered Album. Her song See Me, released in response to the racial unrest of 2020, landed her a nod for Best R&B Performance. Along the way she has toured with John Legend, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, and opened for Sara Bareilles multiple times, plus she co wrote and sang the ending theme for the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe Future.
