Empire of the Sun are a Sydney based electronic duo built around Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, two musicians who first crossed paths in a Sydney bar back when both were signed to EMI. Their debut album Walking on a Dream landed in October 2008 and immediately announced a project with serious ambitions: layered synths, euphoric pop hooks, and a whole theatrical visual universe to match. The lead single of the same name quietly broke a chart record in Australia, spending an unusually long stretch climbing to the top ten. Their sound sits somewhere between electropop and indietronica, big and cinematic but still built for the dancefloor. Tracks like We Are the People crossed over into international advertising campaigns, and later cuts such as Alive picked up remixes from the likes of David Guetta, showing the duo could hold their own in peak festival territory.
