Flower Face is the project of Ruby McKinnon, a Canadian singer songwriter from Windsor, Ontario, who quietly built a following by releasing lo fi bedroom recordings on Bandcamp before most people knew her name. Her stage name came from a nickname her grandmother gave her, which fits the tender, intimate feel of her music pretty well. Her sound sits somewhere in the dream pop and indie pop space, with vocals that float and melodies that disarm you before the words land. Her album The Shark in Your Water is widely seen as her breakthrough, and songs like Angela and Spiracle have earned her genuine attention online. Her 2024 release Girl Prometheus, a breakup album, got a strong reception from Stereogum, who called it intense and magical. The single Maniac is a good example of what she does best, pairing soft guitar and flowing vocals with lyrics that cut much harder than the pretty surface suggests.
