Givēon built his reputation on a deep, soulful baritone that feels out of step with the times in the best possible way, drawing comparisons to classic artists like Barry White and Frank Sinatra while keeping his sound firmly rooted in contemporary R&B. His 2019 song "Like I Want You" put him on the map, but it was "Heartbreak Anniversary" that broke him wide open, hitting quintuple platinum certification and cracking the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. A feature on Justin Bieber's "Peaches" alongside Daniel Caesar brought him to a genuinely massive audience, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning four Grammy nominations.
