About

Also known as: Goran Bregovic, Goran Bregovich, Goran Bregovik, Горан Брегович, Горан Бреговић

Few musicians from the former Yugoslavia have left as deep a mark on world music as Goran Bregovic. He first made his name as the lead guitarist and creative force behind Bijelo Dugme, arguably the most popular rock band in Yugoslav history, before pivoting to solo work and film scoring that brought him to stages like Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Olympia in Paris. His scores for Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, and Underground are some of the most distinctive soundtracks in European cinema, blending Balkan folk textures with raw dramatic punch. He picked up the Golden Arena for Best Film Music at the Pula Film Festival for Silent Gunpowder, and also scored the Academy Award nominated La Reine Margot. Bregovic has a rare gift for collaboration across very different worlds, having written for artists as varied as Iggy Pop, Cesária Évora, Turkish pop star Sezen Aksu, and Polish singer Kayah, with whom he scored several number one hits. His Wedding and Funeral Band has become a vehicle for mixing Romani brass, Balkan folk, and rock into something entirely his own.
