Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge are a guitar duo whose chemistry runs deep enough to have earned a Grammy nomination. Their 2017 album Mount Royal, released on Free Dirt Records, picked up a nod for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and it wasn't their first time recording together. The pair had already put out Close to Picture in 2013 and Avalon in 2014 before that. Lage is a Santa Rosa native who came up fast, playing the Grammy Awards at 12 and later signing to Blue Note Records, where he has kept a steady pace of releases through the 2020s. Eldridge brings a more rootsy sensibility to the partnership, and together they occupy a sweet spot where jazz instincts meet acoustic string tradition, making their records feel both spontaneous and remarkably considered.
