About

Fernando Corona, the Mexican producer behind the Murcof name, makes electronic music that sits somewhere between the dancefloor and the concert hall. His sound draws on minimal techno rhythms and IDM textures while pulling harmonic weight from classical traditions including musique concrète, baroque music and holy minimalism. Early records like the 2001 EP Monotonu sampled orchestral recordings of composers such as Arvo Pärt and Morton Feldman, and the 2005 album Remembranza went further by incorporating Corona and friends actually playing classical instruments. The 2008 commission project The Versailles Sessions had him reinterpreting recordings of a real baroque ensemble. Live, Murcof has brought in guests from wildly different worlds, from jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz to tabla master Talvin Singh to contemporary pianist Francesco Tristano. More recent work in the Murcof catalogue has moved away from electronic beats entirely, leaning into that sparse, almost sculptural quality that made his earlier records so distinctive. Corona has been based in Barcelona since 2006, well away from his Tijuana roots.
