Schouwburg Amphion is a municipal theatre in the centre of Doetinchem, in the Gelderland region of the eastern Netherlands. The building has its roots in the early twentieth century, opening around 1905 to 1906, and takes its name from the figure of Amphion in Greek mythology. After sustaining damage during the Second World War the theatre was rebuilt, and it went through further significant renovations during the 1990s. A major upgrade completed in 2015 expanded seating capacity to roughly 800 and brought the technical facilities up to a modern standard. The venue is operated by Amphion Cultuurbedrijf, the local cultural organisation that positions it as Doetinchem's primary stage for the performing arts. As a theatre, Amphion presents a broad programme that spans drama, dance and live music, with concerts making up a substantial part of the annual calendar. The music offering leans toward Dutch pop, singer songwriter acts and folk, reflecting the kind of theatre circuit that touring Dutch artists regularly include in their national runs. Acts such as Ilse DeLange, The Common Linnets, Krezip, Nielson, Maaike Ouboter and André Hazes have all performed here, alongside smaller Dutch acts like The Kik, Flemming and Bökkers. Classical and choral events also appear on the schedule, as shown by appearances from ensembles including the Nederlands Kamerkoor. This mix gives the venue a character closer to a mid size receiving house on the Dutch touring circuit than a dedicated concert hall, attracting both established names and emerging artists who stop in Doetinchem as part of wider theatre tours.
