Few Brazilian artists have managed to fuse the regional sounds of the Northeast with pop and rock as convincingly as Alceu Valença. His music draws deep from the well of Pernambuco tradition, weaving maracatu, frevo, baião, coco and embolada into arrangements that can equally lean on electric guitar, bass or synthesizer. The result never sounds like a museum piece; it crackles with a restless, sometimes rock edged energy that keeps the roots firmly in place without letting them get dusty. Valença kicked off his career in 1968 with the group Underground Tamarineira Village, later known as Ave Sangria, and went on to collaborate with Zé Ramalho and Elba Ramalho before teaming up with Geraldo Azevedo for their debut album Quadrafônico in 1972. Over more than 20 albums he has toured Portugal, France, the Netherlands and the United States, and his 2014 release Amigo da Arte earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Brazilian Roots Album. He is widely regarded as one of the great voices of Pernambuco music.
