About
Barbara Hannigan is one of those rare musicians who can hold an audience rapt as a soprano and then turn around and conduct the same ensemble, sometimes doing both at once. The Canadian singer from Waverley, Nova Scotia has built her reputation almost entirely in contemporary classical music, premiering around 85 compositions by the time she reached 2023. Her name is closely tied to works like Hans Abrahamsen's let me tell you, George Benjamin's Written on Skin, and György Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre, a concert showpiece she eventually started conducting while simultaneously singing the solo part. Her performance in Alban Berg's Lulu, which involved dancing en pointe, drew serious critical attention, and her album Crazy Girl Crazy earned her a Grammy. She has worked with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and many of Europe's leading ensembles, winning the Ovatie award for her dual role as soprano and conductor at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Since 2019 she has been principal guest conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and in 2024 she was named Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, a position set to begin in 2026.
