About
Bill Stewart has spent over thirty years as one of the most in demand drummers in jazz, working alongside John Scofield, Pat Metheny and Maceo Parker, among others. The New York Times once noted his ability to make a good band sound inexplicably better, which tells you everything about his role. His trio brings together bassist Larry Grenadier, long celebrated for his intuitive playing through decades of collaboration with Brad Mehldau, Paul Motian and Pat Metheny, and tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III, who developed his craft under Roy Haynes, Terence Blanchard and Christian McBride. The three recorded Band Menu together, an album built around a spare, melodically rich approach with no chordal instrument in sight. That stripped back format puts Stewart's drumming at the centre of the music rather than in a supporting role. The group has sold out a full week of residencies at New York's Village Vanguard on two separate occasions, which for jazz fans says plenty about the esteem in which this trio is held.
