About
Buntspecht are a six piece indie pop band from Vienna, Austria, founded in 2016. What makes them hard to pin down is the sheer range of ingredients they stir into the mix: alongside indie pop you'll find Wienerlied, gypsy jazz, funk, bossa nova, folk and klezmer all jostling for space. Their debut album was recorded in a garden shed in 2018, and they have since earned a nomination for the Amadeus Award, Austria's most prestigious music prize. The 2019 single Unter den Masken marked their big breakthrough and landed them regularly near the top of the Austrian charts. Frontman Lukas Klein brings a deeply soulful and distinctive voice to songs that, beneath the danceable surface, carry a philosophical weight and a streak of melancholy. Tracks like Party im Schnitzelhaus and Sexy Fieber from their album Konstrukt 5 show the lighter, more playful side of the band, and it is exactly that unpredictable swing between moods that keeps them so difficult to categorise.
