About
Chris Eckman spent years as the heart of The Walkabouts, the Seattle band he co led with vocalist Carla Torgerson that somehow became bigger in Europe than back home. Drawing from Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, French chanson and Jacques Brel, The Walkabouts built a sound full of string arrangements and dark folk atmosphere, and their video for "The Light Will Stay On" ran in heavy rotation on MTV Europe. They recorded part of their album Devil's Road with the Warsaw Philharmonic, which tells you a lot about their ambitions. Since The Walkabouts disbanded in 2015, Eckman has stayed busy across a sprawling range of collaborations. He is a member of Dirtmusic alongside Chris Brokaw and Hugo Race, has worked with Mali's Tamikrest, contributed to projects with Tosca, and teamed up with Willard Grant Conspiracy. He also serves as label manager for the global sounds imprint Glitterbeat, and has released music under the name Chris and Carla with Torgerson as well as solo work.
