Dar Williams has built a quietly devoted following over three decades in American folk music, and The New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg called her one of America's very best singer songwriters, which is not a bad endorsement to carry around. Her songs circle recurring territory: religion, gender roles, adolescence, humor, and a sharp eye for suburban hypocrisy. Her 1995 Razor and Tie release of The Honesty Room became one of the top selling independent folk albums of that year, and 1996's Mortal City kept the momentum going with guest appearances from John Prine, Lucy Kaplansky, and Cliff Eberhardt. She's toured alongside Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin, among others. In 1998 she joined Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky to form Cry Cry Cry, a covers project celebrating folk music they loved, which produced an album and a tour. After a string of studio albums on Razor and Tie through 2012, Williams signed to Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records and released her album Hummingbird Highway in 2025.
