About
Few bands in the psychobilly world can claim to have been there at the very beginning the way Demented Are Go can. Formed around 1982 in Penarth, just outside Cardiff, they were among the first acts to fuse punk rock with rockabilly, and that early groundwork earned them a lasting reputation as one of the genre's founding influences. Their debut album In Sickness and In Health was recorded in under 24 hours with 90% first takes, which tells you everything about the raw, chaotic energy they brought to the studio. Their 1989 EP The Day the Earth Spat Blood later took on a life of its own as an underground classic, to the point where its cover artwork ended up on a line of Dr. Martens boots over two decades after release. On stage, Demented Are Go were notoriously unpredictable. Tours across Europe, Japan and the US built them a devoted following across both psychobilly and punk scenes, but they were just as likely to be remembered for on stage antics involving vacuum cleaners or rubber fish as for the music itself. Lineup changes, breakups and reformations have followed them throughout their career, but the band's core identity, loud, wild and unapologetically strange, has stayed consistent.
