DJ Krush built his reputation on atmospheric instrumental beats that pull from jazz and soul samples while weaving in sounds drawn straight from nature. The Tokyo born producer and DJ is widely credited as one of the architects of Japanese hip hop, but he has always resisted being pinned to any single genre, describing his own affinity as leaning toward the underground rather than the mainstream. His output spans decades and dozens of releases, from early collaborations with DJ Shadow and Ronny Jordan in the mid 90s to guest spots on records by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Herbie Hancock. His discography is genuinely vast, taking in ambient textures, trip hop grooves and harder edged hip hop productions across albums like Meiso, Jaku, and Butterfly Effect. He has kept the pace going well into recent years, dropping Trickster in 2020 and Saisei in 2024, while a 2022 EP titled 道 STORY showed he still has plenty to say instrumentally. Few producers have managed to stay this restlessly creative across such a long career.
