Few bands defined a decade the way the Eagles defined the 1970s in North America. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner, all of whom had been playing behind Linda Ronstadt, they quickly built a sound that blended country, folk, and rock into something distinctly Californian. Their Greatest Hits (1971 to 1975) remains the best selling album in US history at 40 million copies, and Hotel California, released in 1976, has sold over 32 million copies worldwide. Singles like "Hotel California", "Lyin' Eyes", and "Heartache Tonight" became permanent fixtures of classic rock radio. After breaking up in 1980, they reunited in 1994 for Hell Freezes Over and kept touring steadily. A full studio comeback came in 2007 with Long Road Out of Eden, their sixth number one album in the US. Following Glenn Frey's death in 2016, the band regrouped with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill handling his vocal parts, and they have continued performing since.
